Remote Desktop Services crash after Microsoft update KB2667402

This issue arose just recently with the latest SBS 2011 installations. After the initial setup and a few rounds of updates, the Remote Desktop Services stop when when you attempt to dial in to the SBS 2011 server. All the server services remain functional – DNS, AD, Exchange, shared folders, etc. We were able to connect remotely to the event viewer of the server. In the event log we discovered an error message related to Terminal services:

MachineName = Server
Data = { }
Index = 2524526
Category = Application Crashing Events
CategoryNumber = 100
EventID = 1000
EntryType = Error
Message = Faulting application name: svchost.exe_TermService, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bc3c1
Faulting module name: rdpcorekmts.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16952, time stamp: 0x4f1f9e66

As always, a lengthy research brought the results in the form of a discussion on Microsoft Technet Forums.

There’s still discussion on the status of this problem, but the suggested solution of removing the KB2667402 update, restarting the server and re-installing the update worked so far.

Note: In some cases we some Windows Server 2008 R2 standard as well, and so far this issue has not been observed on these boxes.
