CRM 2011 IFD Email Router configuration problem

In this article we previously discussed some details of IFD CRM 2011. One of the final steps is setting up the email router. After many hours of troubleshooting and researching we still couldn’t get it working. All we had to go by was an event log record:

The E-mail Router service could not process a provider work item using assembly: Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailProviders.dll and class: Microsoft.Crm.Tools.Email.Providers.SmtpPollingSendEmailProvider. System.NotSupportedException: The authentication endpoint Username was not found on the configured Secure Token Service!

Not even Google could help this time. We ended up logging a case with Microsoft.
Lucky enough the MS agent was quickly able to resolve the problem using a Http monitoring tool Fiddler.

There wasn’t anything particularly wrong. What was found was that the ADFS in Server 2012 that we planned to use doesn’t have certain records implemented. When the ADFS was queried, it didn’t contain the following record:
https://adfs20.expd8.com/adfs/services/trust/mex

The solution was to setup ADFS 2.0 server on a Windows Server 2008 R2. Once this was setup, mail router setup worked straight away.
